Judge orders man to clean courthouse toilets for stealing rug

A man was arrested, charged and convicted of theft after stealing a rug, prosecutors in Nigeria said.

Now, Daniel Sunday of Abuja, was sentenced to receive seven strokes with a cane and ordered him to clean the toilets in the courthouse.

According to the police investigation, Sunday stole a welcome rug from a house and took it to his home. As Sunday was stealing the rug, the homeowner happened to look out of his window.

The victim called the police, and officers who went to Sunday’s home found the rug in front of his door. Sunday was arrested at his home and brought to court, where he pleaded guilty to theft.

Sunday claimed that he took the carpet because it had been near a dumpster for more than two days. He said that a house nearby was also demolished and thought that the rug was thrown away.

The judge sentenced Sunday to receive seven lashes with a cane and ordered him to clean the toilets in his courthouse.

Toon was found guilty of committing an indecent act in a public place, and was sentenced to 80 hours of community service. Toon admitted to looking at 27 adult websites on a school computer during a lunch break, but argued that it was not a public place. However, the judge disagreed, saying that anyone could have entered the room. Toon was immediately suspended and he later resigned.
